Tea Time

April 8, 2013 by Casha242

Today on campus there was an international tea party that I thoroughly enjoyed. My only regret is not representing the Baha by bringing out some of our traditional teas aka bush teas.

The cerasee plant is a vine-like plant that can grow wildly on fences. Although a very bitter tea, the seed in the pod are very sweet.

I remember having to drink cerasee, a very bitter bush tea, without sugar or any additives, EVERY SATURDAY like clockwork. My reward would be piece of gum or Fox mint candies. Cerasee is said to be good for worms and blood cleansing. Continue reading →

Sky Juice

April 3, 2013 by Casha242

I’ve read around the internet that in some places sky juice is another way of saying plain water. In The Bahamas, sky juice is far from plain water, unless that water happens to be from a coconut. It’s coconut waters (fresh out of the nut) mixed with gin. Some versions also include sweet milk and the coconut jelly. Continue reading →

Fish & Bread Amen!

April 1, 2013 by Casha242

As I sit here writing this in an attempt to load a show and procrastinate on my reading assignment, I can’t help but to think of my stomach (of course) and how much I wish I was home right now because Easter Monday is a holiday. Smh @ the U.S. govt. but anywho, as mentioned in a previous post, fish and hot cross buns on Good Friday has been a long standing tradition in The Bahamas since before I was me.

Since being away at school I haven’t kept up with the tradition much because it would be a bit hard to find some snappers in a Kansas lake.

Salmon & Cinnamon Rolls

Far cry from what I’m used to back home but I improvised quite well I think! Sapphire Ridge Chronicles shared a recipe for hot cross buns that worked for her. Maybe next Easter I’ll try my hand at making them.

Eating Animals

April 1, 2013 by Casha242

I’m currently reading two non-school related books, one of which is Eating Animals by Johnathan Safran Foer. I’m still in the very beginning stages of the book but I like what I’ve read so far. It has made me recap my history of eating meat and the relationship I have with my food. Continue reading →

3rd World Story

March 29, 2013 by Casha242

Despite being less than an hour away by plane from Florida and having millions of tourists grace our shores annually, The Bahamas is still a third world country. I don’t think we like to admit that to ourselves sometimes because our outward appearance is like that of any other person you might see in the U.S. We wear the Ralph Lauren, the Aeropostale and the like and our homes and equipped  with the modern kitchen appliances. But we still depend on the U.S. to import many of our foods and even fruits that we could very well grow here.

The first step is to admitting that we have a problem. We are dependent on the U.S. for so much and that’s kind of sad because if things go to crap because of war or the U.S. messes up their alliances with an oil-supplying country, we’re going to feel that bruise just as much.

No matter how much we try to keep up with the United States’ technologies and the rest of the materialistic junk, it won’t change the fact that we as a country although “independent” since 1973, can’t stand on our own two feet if our lives depended on it and each generation that comes up will be wiser but weaker. They will be hip to all that’s new and shiny but would frown up their noses at real oranges because they aren’t all sweet nor are they all that fake bright color.

Anywho,  I just thought readers should know that yes we are a third world country, a very proud one at that. So don’t go asking us if we have inside toilets and live in straw huts and what not. You won’t get a pleasant response. But in truth, 95% of what is in our food stores comes from “the States”.
